There’s a lot of buzz about Google+, all these experts proclaiming how good it is.

I really don’t care (yet).

It’s called Metcalfe’s Law.

According to Wikipedia, Metcalfe’s Law occurs when, “the value of a [tele]communications network is proportional to the square of the number of connected users of the system.”

For example, the fax machine was a great new toy when it came out, but the features of it wasn’t what made it successful.

The number of other people using it was.

What made Facebook.com so successful for marketers and brands wasn’t that they created the best new mouse trap.

It was that over half our country joined the mouse trap.

And I don’t care about the 10 million people that joined Google+ in the first two weeks.

That’s called innovators and early adopters.

Most new technology products/platforms have them.

It wouldn’t surprise me if 75% of the members of Google+ were in the marketing/technology field. Wouldn’t almost every marketer and technology enthusiast at least create an account in the first month to check it out?

Seven out of the eight people kind enough to add me to their circle so far fall into this category.

There’s also a scary stage that happens during the early adopter stage.

It’s called the chasm, and most technologies don’t survive it.

Adoption Life Cycle

A great book to read on this topic is called Crossing the Chasm by Geoffrey A. Moore.

With all that said, don’t take this is a “hate Google article.” It’s not.

I like and respect what Google has accomplished in the internet world.

They’re gigantically brilliant.

However, as a marketer, I have to be agnostic to platforms on behalf of my clients because it’s not about the platforms, but about the people.

Therefore, I just don’t care about Google+ (yet).
